SCHOLARSHIPS
An Unprecedented Year of Need

Scholarship Applications Nearly Double in 2020 | The number of scholarship applications increased to 620 this year, nearly doubling the ranks of hopeful student applicants compared to last year. Financial impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic, an extended scholarship application period, increased student enrollments, and a more concerted effort to promote scholarship opportunities are among the contributing factors for the spike in students seeking aid. More than 100 students received scholarships totaling more than $50,000.

Two New Scholarships Established, Two in Progress | The launch of the Dimitrios Morikis Bioengineering Scholarship and the G. Neal Richter Scholarship in Energy Innovation are the latest additions to the scholarship funds that provide engineering students with financial support. These new additions bring the total number of engineering scholarships to 22 funds

Fundraising for two scholarship initiatives remain in progress - the Akula Venkatram Mechanical Engineering Scholarship and the J. Wayne Miller and Thomas D. Durbin Graduate Research Award Fund.

"Growing up in a small, underfunded, and disadvantaged town lacking resources for higher education and STEM careers, I have realized that I have to work twice as hard to catch up to my peers – many of whom entered college with industry connections, computer science knowledge, and previous internship experience. I have been determined to make up for my weakness by being as involved in BCOE as possible."

Dean’s Innovation Fund

The Dean’s Innovation Fund provides seed funding for new, innovative, strategic initiatives at the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. This fund enables the Dean to take advantage of opportunities that arise over the course of the year to support research projects, leadership development, and educational experiences for students. It is also available to assist with faculty retention, acquisition of new equipment, brand development and strategic planning. Gifts to the Dean’s Innovation Fund have an immediate impact on the success of our students and faculty.

NSBE Fund

In partnership with the Council for the Advancement of Black Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), University of California, Riverside has established a special endowed fund to provide stable, long-term support for the activities of the NSBE chapter at the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for this unique and first-of-its-kind endowed fund at UCR to support the activities of a student professional organization.
