Everett and Imogene Ross

Everett and Imogene Ross were both native Californians and lived in Riverside, California, for many years. As community members, they valued UC Riverside as an important resource and educational facility in the Inland Empire. They held a strong belief in supporting and enhancing opportunities for learning in the region. Imogene and the three Ross children, Patricia, Barbara, and Howard, attended UCR. Imogene earned her teaching credential, Patricia went on to graduate from UC Santa Barbara, Barbara began her studies there as a senior in high school and went on to graduate from UC Berkley, and Howard completed his first two years there then transferred to UC Irvine to complete the necessary classes for his degree.

Everett and Imogene Ross felt strongly that enabling students to complete their educations at UCR would increase the likelihood of them staying to work and raise families in Riverside thereby contributing to ongoing economic and civic vitality of the region.

Everett and Imogene Ross and the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns families lived across the street from each other, and the Ross Term Chairs in Computer Science serve as an enduring tribute to the friendship between the two families.

Imogene Ross (1925-2016) was born in Huntington Beach, California. Everett Conger Ross (1922-2008) was born in Orange, California. They married on July 1, 1944, in Monterey, California, and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s companionship for 64 years. Everett was in the navy during WWII.  Imogene was one of the early employees of Hewlett Packard and supported Everett while he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford. Everett joined Allis Chalmers and sold power solutions to companies needing electrical motors and transformers. This led to a career in public utilities when in 1958, Everett was appointed Director of Public Utilities for the City of Riverside. They built a home in Riverside, and Imogene taught kindergarten for over 20 years for the Riverside Unified School District. In 1989 they retired and moved to Monarch Beach, California, and then on to Coronado Shores, California. Everett was an avid sailor and accomplished yacht racer who, with his daughters as crew, won the Pacific Coast Championship in the Thistle class in 1968. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and received the Mason’s Golden Veterans Award for 50 years of service. The couple enjoyed cruises, tennis, bridge, dancing, and the San Diego Zoo.

Nora A. Hackett Instructional Equipment Endowed Fund

Nora Hackett, a member of the UC Riverside Board of Trustees and BCOE Council of Advisors, established an endowment in the amount of $500,000. The Nora A. Hackett Instructional Equipment Endowed Fund provides a steady annual source of funds for new and current lab equipment, ensuring that undergraduate and graduate students are best prepared to conduct research or enter the workforce.

B&K Precision Corporation Donation of Lab Equipment

In fall 2019, B&K Precision Corporation donated 48 instruments valued at nearly $30,000 to the departments of electrical and computer engineering and bioengineering to upgrade their instructional labs and use for projects and competitions. With this new contribution, B&K Precision Corporation has given more than $150,000 to support BCOE in the past five years. In addition, B&K Precision Corporation’s partnership with BCOE extends beyond the lab. The company frequently hires UC Riverside students as interns, giving them experience working in industry.
